Modern Neutral Glam, New Vernon, NJ

This project is a true testament to the endless possibilities of virtual design! To date, I have yet to meet these wonderful homeowners face-to-face. However, this project located in New Vernon, NJ quickly earned status as one of my all-time favorites!

The home itself is a sprawling 6,000 sqft ranch originally built in 1989. A true floor to ceiling renovation, the home has undergone a complete transformation leaving the mere frame and studs as a nod to the original builder. Upon entering the residence, guests are immediately drawn in by a spacious open floor plan, 10′ ceilings, luxury fabrics and furnishings, and elegant touches of warm metals and crystal throughout. There is a formality to each space but still feels warm and welcoming.

The home owner and I worked together to design and style the main living spaces as well as select areas of their finished basement with a modern, neutral style and just the right touch of glam. I couldn’t be happier to share the before and afters here.

Modern Classic Kitchen Remodel

When this traditional classic brick-front home was built 17 years ago, Mediterranean style kitchens were on trend! Cherry wood cabinetry, beige and black speckled granite countertops, grape leaf detailing, and taupe tile backsplashes were some of the more popular characteristics of this aesthetic. Since the home’s private and very wooded backyard does not allow for a ton of natural light, dark cabinetry made the kitchen feel like a Tuscan cave! Time for a major refresh.

The goal – modern, neutral, bright and elegant.

One of the most cost effective ways to remodel a kitchen is to have the cabinets painted instead of replaced. Luckily these cabinets, once the original antique glazing was sanded down, were in gorgeous shape! So by choosing two contrasting paint colors, Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore for the perimeters and Black Magic by Sherwin Williams for the island and hood/range, we gave them an entire new modern day look.

The countertops and backsplash selection were critical for taking this dated kitchen to the next level. We chose MSI Stile Calacatta Gold Polished Porcelain and decided to carry the countertops up to the backsplash for a real wow factor. This stone contains a rich mixture of cool and warm veining to help balance contrasting cabinetry and warm walnut wood floors. Not only does it look stunning, but it performs extremely well with daily use.

Honey Bronze hardware by Top Knobs and Champagne Gold Brizio faucets helped elevate the kitchen from the drab builder’s brushed chrome. We also added an oversized undermount Kraus fireclay sink in polished white to the main peninsula as well as island prep sink.

The finishing touch was to add two matching performance runners by Ballard Design in neutral geometric pattern. Lighting update to be shared soon!

Formal Great Room Glam, Orland Park, Kansas

There’s nothing this designer loves more than a completely blank slate! The potential for this family’s Formal Living Room were endless and what a wow factor this space now has. When this couple and I started working together, their vision was to make the room more elevated, with curated selections and a modern feel with a variety of textures and finishes. A place for them to host guests that felt more formal than a Living Room but still comfortable and luxurious.

We quickly eliminated the TV over the fireplace mantle, since this most definitely makes any room feel more casual, and decided on a black baby grand piano to set the mood. A fresh coat of paint from a cool Agreeable Gray to more earthy and neutral Sherwin Williams Greek Villa immediately brightened things up. By adding wainscotting and shadow box trim to all walls, the space suddenly felt more stately.

Furnishings include a gorgeous velvety chocolate low back sofa with brass framing, round nesting coffee tables with shagreen skin tops, a modern elegant crystal drum chandelier, and two matching ivory performance fabric and grey washed wood lounge chairs. Accessories included a cashmere chain link patterned throw blanket, brass and glass elegant table lamp, a live potted 7′ olive tree, large coffee table books, and glass pillar candle holders. Custom velvet curtain panels in silvery slate added the finishing touch to bay windows, which offered a stunning view of the home’s garden.

Empty Nest Remodel, Naperville, IL

After raising her three children, creating decades worth of family memories, and now welcoming grandchildren into her home, Lori knew it was time for a major upgrade. The first level living space included in this renovation was the Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, Powder Room and Family Room. The main goals for this client were to create more openness between each space and give a more airy and bright feel through neutral modern furnishings and accessories.

Walls separating the Kitchen from Dining Room and Living Room were eliminated and a completely new Kitchen layout was constructed including a center island. The entire home was given a fresh coat of paint from a dark putty color to a brighter more welcoming neutral with Benjamin Moore Classic Grey. New honey colored hardwood oak flooring replaced dated cherry and the original turquoise painted brick fireplace was treated with a modern stacked stone in creamy neutrals.

Kitchen cabinets are airy and fresh in Benjamin Moore Distant Gray and adorned with Top Knobs honey champagne hardware. We chose a warm greige picket-shaped tile backsplash with beveled detailing and a polished finish as the true visual showpiece. Twin island pendants by Millennium Lighting include a cylinder-shaped column glass shade and add the perfect level of sparkle to this beautifully renovated Kitchen!

The Maple House, Naperville IL

Talk about potential! The first time I stepped foot into the stately 4,500 sqft stone-front colonial, I was immediately inspired. A 17-year old home with incredible bones and characteristics in need of a little modern day facelift. I went to work on day one and haven’t stopped yet. The once Tuscan-styled abode, now with a fresh perspective and updated energy feels brighter and more welcoming than ever.

Inviting Sunroom, Naperville, IL

When Lena came to me asking to help design her Sunroom, I knew this would be a fun project. Her vision was to transform this empty space into an oasis of relaxation and connection for the family. Working with her existing paint colors and flooring, neutral and comfortable pieces were incorporated including a velvet curved sofa, upholstered arm chairs and a cushy tufted ottoman. Lastly, an oversized floral print rug and greenery brought in modern pops of color. We kept the space bright and uplifting!

“Lauren was knowledgeable, patient, and so attentive to details with my Sunroom project!  She understood my vision for this space, which sat empty for many years. Lauren turned around her designs quickly and saved me loads of wasted time and energy!  I’d hire her again, without a doubt and am really loving my new Sunroom.” ~ Lena K.
